Otoplasty
Otoplasty is a cosmetic ear surgery performed to correct congenital or acquired ear shape, size, or position issues. The most common reason is prominent ears that stick out more than normal.
Indications:
- Ears that stick out prominently
- Asymmetrical ear shape or underdeveloped folds
- Ear deformity due to trauma or previous surgery
- Suitable for children over 6 years and adults
Procedure:
- Performed under general or local anesthesia
- A hidden incision is made behind the ear
- Cartilage is reshaped or reinforced
- The ear is repositioned closer to the head and made symmetrical
- Duration: 1–2 hours
Benefits:
- Ears no longer stick out, more aesthetic appearance
- Increases self-confidence and social comfort
- No visible scars, as the incision is behind the ear
- Rarely requires revision surgery
Recovery:
- Head dressing or special protective bandage for 1 week
- Rest recommended for 5–7 days
- Full return to normal activities in 2–4 weeks
- Redness, swelling, and mild pain are normal and temporary
FAQs:
1. Is otoplasty painful?
No pain during the procedure; mild discomfort afterward manageable with painkillers.
2. Can the ears return to a protruding position?
- If post-operative instructions are followed, the results are permanent.
3. Can it be performed on children?
- Yes, on children 6 years and older, when ear development is complete.
4. Will there be visible scars?
- No, the incision is behind the ear and fades completely over time.
